چکیده

We study the impact of scale on data representation from both the modelling and querying points of view. While our starting point was geographical applications, statistical databases also address this problem of data representation at various levels of abstraction. From these requirements, we propose a model which allows: (i) database querying without exact knowledge of the data abstraction level, (ii) the computation of multiple representations of data, one per abstraction level, and (iii) its application to the computation of statistical summaries. The model has been partially implemented with the DBMS by means of tree-structured domains: we give some examples which illustrate the above features.

Partition and Conquer

Although maps and partitions are ubiquitous in geographical information systems and spatial databases, there is only little work investigating their foundations. We give a rigorous definition for spatial partitions and propose partitions as a generic spatial data type that can be used to model arbitrary maps and to support spatial analysis. We identify a set of three powerful operations on part...

Land use impacts on surface water quality by statistical approaches

Surface waters are the most important economic resource for humans which provide water for agricultural, industrial and anthropogenic activities. Surface water quality plays vital role in protecting aquatic ecosystems. Unplanned urbanization, intense agricultural activities and deforestation are positively associated with carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous related water quality parameters. Multip...

Application of multi-criteria decision making to estimate the potential of flooding

Integrating a geographic information system and multi-criteria decision making methods have been lead to provide spatial multi-criteria decision making methods. In this study, the spatial potential of flooding was determined based on analytic network process and analytic hierarchy process. At first, six factors of flooding were determined as criteria. The criteria were the slope, hill-slope asp...

The Application of Multi-Layer Artificial Neural Networks in Speckle Reduction (Methodology)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) uses the spatial and temporal coherence properties of optical waves backscattered from a tissue sample to form an image. An inherent characteristic of coherent imaging is the presence of speckle noise. In this study we use a new ensemble framework which is a combination of several Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks to denoise OCT images. The noise is...

Protein multi-scale organization through graph partitioning and robustness analysis: application to the myosin-myosin light chain interaction.

Despite the recognized importance of the multi-scale spatio-temporal organization of proteins, most computational tools can only access a limited spectrum of time and spatial scales, thereby ignoring the effects on protein behavior of the intricate coupling between the different scales. Starting from a physico-chemical atomistic network of interactions that encodes the structure of the protein,...
